Description: One of our brand name tours. This tour gives an off-the-beaten-track introduction to the Mongolian landscape and the nomadic people and culture. This tour introduces you to the Mongolian Gobi Desert and the Forest (Khangai), High Mountain, and Lake landscapes, in a timely and cost-efficient way.
Activities: Sightseeing; blueberry harvesting, natural spring soaking, Ulaanbaatar city tour and optional trekking and horseback riding.
ITINERARY & PRICE
Day 1: Arrive at Ulaanbaatar City, Transfer to hotel. After some personal refreshment, start guided city tour. Visit to Zaisan Memorial to see a view of the entire city. Our staff will guide you through some major spots, such as Sukhbaatar Square and the Opera House. Visit the Museum of Natural History and other museums, if time allows. Stay overnight at the hotel.
Day 2: Drive to the Khogno Khan Mountain, one of the strictly protected areas of Mongolia. Make a trek to the mountain through beautiful surroundings to visit Ovgon Temple. Then drive to Bayangobi, a spectacular combination of sand dunes and grassland. Have lunch and dinner at the tourist camp restaurants. Stay overnight at ger camp.
Day 3: Drive to Khar-Khorin, the ancient capital of Mongolia in the 13th century, and see Mongolia’s oldest monastery Erdene Zuu. Drive toward Tuvkhun Temple, a place where Zanabazar, the first Buddhist leader of Mongolia, meditated and created his finest works of arts within a period of over 30years. Stay overnight in a ger camp near the Monastery.
Day 4: Trek to Tuvkhun Temple. Enjoy the stunning beauty of the High Mountain, where the temple is built. Zanabazar called the temple the Land of Happy Solitude. There is a cave called Mother Belly, which is said to cleanse people of all their sins if they go in and out of the cave. Drive back to Khar-Khorin. Stay overnight at a ger camp.
Days 5-6: Drive further northwest to Tsenkher Hot Spring. At the spring, water with hydrogen sulphide pulses out of ground at 86°C. Take a hot soak. Visit a nomadic herder family and taste some hand processed dairy products. Observe the daily activities of herders. Ride horses and enjoy leisure time. Stay overnight at the ger camp.
Day 7: Drive further to the town of Tsetserleg, a provincial center of Arkhangai aymag and visit Zaya Gegeen Temple Museum built, in the 18th century. Next drive to Taihar Rock and observe inscriptions in different Asian languages, such as Old and New Mongolian and Turkish, Tibetan, and Chinese. Relax near the river bank. Stay overnight at the ger camp.
Day 11: Drive to the Chuluut River Canyon. The Chuluut river is rich in many species of fish, including lennok and taimen. Trek down to the canyon. Drive westward to the dormant Horgo volcano. Enjoy the stunning natural beauty created by past volcanic eruptions. Do some fishing and swim in Terkhiin Tsagaan Lake, our final destination for today. Stay overnight in the ger camp.
Day 12-13: Drive further west, entering the territory of Zavkhan Province. We will stay with a nomadic family to learn their way of life. Main activities are:
a) Horseback-riding, yak, and cow-cart riding.
b) Processing diary products
c) Harvesting blueberries and other fruits in the surrounding forest
d) Horse trekking to the nearby “Tsetsuuh” Natural Spring and taking a hot soak
Day 14: Drive (160 km) to Lake Telmen and Zambaga tourist camp stopping over Ider River and Tosontsengel soum. Stay overnight at the ger tourist camp.
Day 15: Drive east (80 km) to a tourist camp on the shore of Lake Khag in Yaruu soum. Hot showers are available.
Day 16: Drive east (70 km) to Lake Har and enjoy trekking around the beautiful lake which is surrounded by sand dunes. Appreciate the quickly changing landscape as you travel from the mountain forests to the steppes to the Gobi Desert. Then drive further (50 km) to Senjit Khad, an interesting formation of rocks. Tent camping.
Day 17: Drive (60 km) to River Hungui and observe how its source flows from beneath the sand dune. Then, drive (80 km) to Ikh Khairkan Cave in Durvoljin soum. After observing the cave, drive further (40 km) to the famous Zavkhan River, which flows through the Great Mongolia Sand Dune. Enjoy swimming in the warm river water. Tent camping.
Day 18: Drive (150 km) to Uliastay, a center of Zavkhan province. After visiting local market and seeing provincial museum drive 10 km to Ikh Mongol tourist camp to stay overnight.
Day 19: Drive to the Dayan Deerkh Terrace to see a beautiful view of Mount Otgontenger. Continue driving and reach Mount Otgontenger, one of the most sacred mountains in Mongolia, rich with a highly religious and symbolic meaning for the Mongolian people.
Day 20-21: Spend the entire day relaxing at the camp, soaking in the natural spring, riding horses, and trekking to the mountains.
Day 22: Start early day driving to Uliastay to catch your flight to Ulaanbaatar. Stay overnight in the hotel in Ulaanbaatar
Day 23: Take advantage of free time before your departure. Visit some cashmere, clothing, souvenir and antique shops. Transfer to the airport.
